L'Honorable Benjamin J. Greenberg, C.R. 1933 - 2019
It is with profound sadness that the members of the law firm of Dunton Rainville learned of the passing of their colleague, the Honourable Benjamin J. Greenberg, Q.C., on Monday, June 3, 2019.
Me. Greenberg was called to the Quebec Bar in 1959 and practiced business law. He was an active litigator in Quebec’s civil courts before being appointed as a judge in 1976. After serving on the Superior Court of Quebec for more than 22 years, he acted as an arbitrator and mediator, mainly in international arbitration and Canadian commercial arbitration. Me. Greenberg joined Dunton Rainville in 2014.
In November 2013, Me Benjamin J. Greenberg was admitted to the CPR “Panel of Distinguished Neutrals” (International Institute for Conflict Prevention & Resolution) in New York. He was named Queen’s Counsel in February 1976.
Me Greenberg was one of a very few Canadian international arbitrators recognized in “Who’s Who Legal, The International Who’s Who of Business Lawyers” (United Kingdom), in their 2018 publication of “The International Who’s Who of Commercial Arbitration”.
Me Greenberg was a member of the Arbitration and Mediation Institute of Canada, which granted him the title of Chartered Arbitrator (C. Arb.). Since November 1999, Me Greenberg had been a member of the International Court of Arbitration of the Canadian Chamber of Commerce (CCC), of which he was chairman from November 2002 to October 2005, and which is the Canadian affiliate of the International Chamber of Commerce (ICC), Paris. His name also appeared on the list of international arbitrators and mediators of the American Arbitration Association and its international division, the International Centre for Dispute Resolution (ICDR).
Since 2006, Me Greenberg was an instructor at the ICDR’s annual symposium, entitled “International Symposium in Advanced Case Management Issues”.
His name had been added to the list of international energy arbitrators established under the terms of the Energy Treaty. He was appointed as a member of the Comité de la formation d’instruction and placed on the list of arbitrators of the Investment Industry Regulatory Organization of Canada (IIROC). His name was also on the list of arbitrators of the Canadian Transportation Agency under the Canada Transportation Act.

Me Greenberg was a member of the Quebec Bar, the Canadian Bar Association and the International Bar Association. He was also an associate member of the American Bar Association.
Me Greenberg was a member of the board of directors of the Miriam Home from 1970 to 2010 and president from February 2000 to December 2002.
He was also a member of the Japan Society of Canada, director of the Society from 1969 to 1972 and President from 1970 to 1971.
